I don’t mean to go on a rant, but…

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Is anyone else as tired as I am of the buzzwords “green” and “sustainability?” I’m not fond of buzzwords in general, but these are being done to death. I won’t read anything that has to do with the constant pressure to be “green.” I don’t CARE if my clothes or cosmetics are made out of sustainable stuff. It means nothing. It’s just hype, in my never-shyly-expressed opinion. And don’t even get me started about carbon footprints and carbon credits!

On a less-ranting note, I’m going to put my derriere in the chair tomorrow and get back into my work-in-progress tomorrow. It’s about time!

Revisions done! On with normal life for awhile

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Once again, I’ve survived the Battle of Revisions–always a strenuous process that starts with giving myself a day to pout and declare to myself that my way was the best way, and how dare anyone touch my precious verbiage? After that, common sense begins to creep in, and as I work through the various points in an editor’s revision letter, I realize she’s right on target, almost 100%, about what this book needs to be part of this line. After all, Steeple Hill Love Inspired has standards to maintain, so my book must live up to those standards. Even those revisions I have done mentally kicking and screaming have often turned out for the best, if comments received on these books are anything to go by.

I suspect very few writers don’t need at least a *little* editing. I’ve read those that didn’t get it–often by well-known bestsellers–and it’s beenĀ  a painfulĀ  experience.

Tomorrow I’ll put PICTURE OF AN OUTLAW in the mail to my editor, and pray that she agrees that I did a good job on the revisions. That’s just its working title, since the Powers That Be are still debating what its final title should be. I’ll take the rest of this week to catch up on my to-do list, which always gets long when I’m meeting a deadline or doing revisions. For the rest of this week, I won’t feel guilty for Not Writing. I’ll get my car’s oil changed, buy a wedding present and hopefully a dress to wear for this wedding, get a dog to the vet for needed immunizations and a health check up. Maybe the two longhaired dogs will even get brushed, and their nails trimmed! Maybe I’ll even get to READ. Hope springs eternal.

Meanwhile, I’d love to hear from you–”you” being non-spammers. Spammers, get a life. Your spams won’t show up because my webmistress was smart enough to use a program where I get to check first what goes on my blog responses. I’m glad she did. Why not write me and tell me what you’re reading, what movies you’ve seen? Any recommendations?

Rest in Peace, Eight Belles

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

Another non-writing-related post. Hope you’ll indulge me, but I can’t write today. I’m heartsick. I’m officially never going to ever watch horseracing on TV or in person again. Ever. A friend of mine made this vow after what happened to Barbaro 2 years ago, but I thought the odds were against it ever happening again. But yesterday in the Kentucky Derby, when I was still having visions of how cool it would be to be there sipping a mint julep and wearing a big hat, it happened again to the very horse I picked to win. Eight Belles was very tall for a mare, 17 hands, and ran her heart out. And her legs, apparently. Rest in peace, beautiful girl. My thoughts and prayers go out to her owners, trainer and her jockey. I’m thankful they put her down quickly before she could suffer any longer than she did. My heart aches. I used to own horses, and thankfully I never had to make such a decision.

Melissa Endlich on Writers at Play today

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

My editor, Melissa Endlich at Steeple Hill Love Inspired Historicals, visited Writers at Play today. It’s not too late to visit and leave a comment, and maybe win one of the many books and other prizes being raffled off.

Congrats to Barbour author Amber Miller, who won my first Steeple Hill book, HILL COUNTRY CHRISTMAS, on Writers at Play by visiting. Of course, she’ll have to wait till it’s out in September… :)

And now, back to my revisions like the good lil’ author I am! ;)
