Roger Cherry, winter angel

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

We had a big snowfall yesterday–6-8″ depending on where one lives in the central Ohio area. South of here, they got ice, so we were blessed. Fortunately I didn’t have to go to work the night before when it started, or yesterday, so I could look forward to an afternoon of working on the proposal for SOMEONE FOR SARAH. I even sneaked in a nap between lunch and dh cutting tile in the course of his bathroom-remodelling.

I know he was planning on shovelling out our 66′ driveway once the snow stopped, or today, but we had a lovely instance of grace yesterday–before he could do so, the neighbor showed up with his 4-wheeldrive pickup and snowplow blade and without asking, plowed it out, doing in the course of five minutes what it would have taken Tom much longer and much more effort to do.  He wouldn’t take any money for it either. I don’t know if you surf the internet, Roger Cherry, but thanks so much for what you did! You’re a winter angel!

And now back to my work-in-progress. Gotta finish this proposal and get it to my editor by 2/15, and then I’m going to kick back and read my Rita contest entries. I’ve got some great-looking Regency historicals, a Victorian-era mystery, and what looks to be a humerous contemporary.

So what are you doing these cold winter days?

Blessings, Laurie

Coooooold…Starting the new book

Friday, January 16th, 2009

I’ve had four days off from my “other job” now, which have been full of crossing things off on my to-do list and mainly staying inside because we’ve had intense cold and on Wednesday, 5-6″ of snow. The thermometer’s been hovering at zero and is presently a balmy (NOT!) 2 degrees. :( (I was born for a warmer climate, I tell ya!) But I’ve managed to get out and get my highlights redone, groceries and watch batteries bought, and today, my annual eye exam. I’ve cleaned and rearranged and edited the Christmas photos. I did my section of Marcia Anderson’s  online promotion workshop (see last blog), Promoting to Your Friends and Coworkers. I’m fairly pleased with how the latter came out, though it really exposes my cynical side.

There’s still things on my to-do list, but It’s Time to Begin the New Book. Once again, I’m facing the terror of the blank page of Ch.1, telling myself it should be easier since I’m just continuing the saga of the Spinsters of Simpson Creek, this time from Sarah’s point of view. I’m calling it SOMEONE FOR SARAH. I’m hoping blogging will get me warmed up so that the words just come pouring out.

How do you begin? Let me know!

My friend and fellow writer asked me to pass this along about her Self-Promotion Workshop, and I’d like to solicit your input on my part of it, Promoting to your friends and coworkers. What’s worked for you, what hasn’t? Thanks in advance.

Post deadline celebration

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

Two days ago I finished MARRYING MILLY, and yesterday I sent it to my editor and agent!!!!! It will arrive officially two days early. Whew! There were days I didn’t think I’d see this day come to pass. I want to thank God right now I didn’t have any computer malfunctions, fall and break both wrists, etc.!

I can’t WAIT to get started on the to-do list that gets longer and longer as I strain to make a deadline. It sounds trivial, but tops on the list is wanting to get my highlights done, getting to the optometrist for my annual exam, playing with the electronics I’ve bought lately–a webcam, installing Word on my eee-PC mini computer, learning how to use my MP3 player–yep, I’m old, MP3 players don’t come naturally to me! And I need new watch batteries! Oh, yes, and I guess it’s time the Christmas decorations came down…

As soon as I have a few days of “free time” I really need to get started in the next book of the Simpson Creek Spinsters, while I’m still “in the story.” This will be Milly’s sister Sarah’s story, and I can’t wait to get her together with her Yankee doctor and watch the sparks fly. I’m thinking of titles…maybe SOMEONE FOR SARAH? Anyone else have any good ideas? Bring ‘em on!!!!

Keep your fingers crossed with me that my editor REALLY REALLY likes my Milly story.

Blessings, Laurie
