I’m slogging along in the middle of the book, but just wanted to take a minute out to say I’ll be reviewing books for Waterbrook/Multnomah and posting them on my blog. Seems like a sweet deal to get free advance review copies, eh? As well, I’ve been asked to provide a blurb for LOVE’S RESCUE, by Tammy Barley, to be published by Whitaker House. I’m really touched and flattered to be asked to do that!
I’ve also been working on planning our April trip to Texas. I think half the fun of a trip is in the anticipation. We’ll be landing in El Paso and driving on to Alpine, if all goes well. I’m excited because I’ve never been that far west in Texas. The next two days we’ll be spending in Texas’s magnificent Big Bend country. Accomodations there seem to be either $$$resort-priced or barebones basic. We’ve opted for something middle-of-the-road in the tiny town of Terlingua.
Then we’ll be going on to the San Saba area, which is the locale in which I set MARRYING MILLY and my current work-in-progress, SOMEONE FOR SARAH. Any onsite research I have done in my writing career seems to be after the fact rather than before, but these days I make up fictional towns, rather than trying to make a real one fit in with what I need. One time when I was in England I checked out Winslade, a town I’d used for a medieval Laurie Grant book, only to find out it was a post office address and nothing more. There was only a sign in the middle of the countryside.
After that it’ll be on to visit my aunt and cousins in the Austin area! And now, I’d better get back to my SARAH.
Blessings, Laurie

Sigh….today was the day that the Rita nomination calls were made, and I have to admit, I had hopes for HILL COUNTRY CHRISTMAS, but then I always have hopes whenever I enter. There was no call, however. I gotta admit, I’d love to be one of the nominees, wearing an extra-special dress on awards night at the RWA convention, and receiving the recognition that my book was worthy of a nomination, or even one of those nifty Rita statuettes. Maybe next year, or maybe this year in one of the other contests I entered…
I’m sincerely happy for those who were nominated, however, of course! Thanks for writing the books that make readers take notice of our genre!
Now back to my work in progress, chapter six…
Blessings, Laurie

We’re back to wintry temps here, at least for one more day, but I think I’ll try and upload another spring picture anyway from my files.
I just sent back the unjustified page proofs to Steeple Hill. This is my manuscript with the changes/corrections the editor and I input the last time, with each line numbered, and is yet another chance for me to catch any typos. I’ll have one more chance, when it’s in the galley stage. Then it will look just like the printed pages of a book, except without the cover and binding. Sometimes I wish I had a English major to read this over, as naturally I’m getting SO tired of reading this story AGAIN, yet I doubt another reader, however perfect his/her grasp of grammar was, would catch the factual errors that creep into the best of manuscripts. So I slog on through it, and now must get back to my work-in-progress after three days away from it. Once more into the breach!

MY CROCUSES ARE UP!!!! I know these are daffodils, not crocus, but I didn’t find a picture of those in my digital camera files, and I’ve finally figured out how to put my pictures in my blog. It just makes me feel so good when the first sign that winter is coming to an end arrives. I can’t wait for warm weather!
Another sign is the beginning of daylight savings time which comes this weekend. I’m lucky to be working that night, so instead of losing an hour’s sleep, I’m getting paid for 12 hours and only work for 11!

I’m on Facebook now. It’s been a lot of fun, “friending” everyone I know that’s on it and being friended. It’s certainly a useful networking tool, both for my writing career and because all my emergency room friends are on it. I’ve enjoyed getting to know them better and seeing their family photos.
I was thinking just the other day how the internet has changed the writing world, and wondering if it had come out before I was published, if I would even be published. There were no distractions when I wrote my first book in longhand in the mid 80’s (yes, that long ago) and almost no computers. Certainly no online services, and no one had thought of blogging. Now you can get online via your phone, for crying out loud, and there’s SOOOOO many ways to distract yourself and waste time, even ways that make you think you’re working to further your career when you’re really just wasting time. My deadline doesn’t care that I love to play on the internet for hours. So I’m going to sign off now and get back to SOMEONE FOR SARAH, so I can finish the current chapter!
By the way, if you’re on Facebook and Shoutlife, please friend me!
Blessings, Laurie
